Charles V (24 February 1500 – ), Holy Roman Emperor (1519 – ) and King of Spain (1516 – ). Charles is the nephew of Catherine of Aragon. He has the most extensive dominion of any ruler in Europe at this time, including Spain and the Low Countries.

In 1527, Wolsey has all plans and all futures in his head. This includes an alliance with Emperor Charles and Spain. But it also may involve a marriage alliance with France, the other great power in Europe. England’s prospects are so often determined by the current relationship between France and the Empire.
