Richard Sampson is steeped in the paperwork of Katherine’s annulment. He brings mule loads of folios to Cromwell to assist in Anne’s divorce. ‘Here is a pretty pickle,’ is all he can say. It is Sampson who suggests talking to Thomas Boleyn: ‘He’s a reasonable man… Get him to ask his daughter to go quietly. Save us all twenty years of grief.’
