Chapter 15
The overseer at Bald Hills is clearing the road of snow because “the minister”, Vasili Kuragin, is coming. Bolkonsky tells him that this road is not swept for his daughter, so it should not be swept for Kuragin. “Throw the snow back on the road!”

Chapter 3
Mikhail Ivanovich returns Andrei’s letter to the old prince. But Bolkonsky is busy with his will and issuing instructions to Alpatych, who will ride out to Smolensk.
Chapter 4
Alpatych goes to Smolensk with the prince’s instructions and a letter from Marya for the governor. The French bombardment of the city is underway. Alpatych stays with an innkeeper who beats his wife for wanting to leave the city. The governor of Smolensk tells Alpatych that the Bolkonskys should leave for Moscow immediately. Looting begins, and the innkeeper sets fire to his shop. Andrei appears and writes a note to his sister: leave for Moscow now.
Chapter 5
Andrei leads his regiment in retreat towards Moscow. The head is unrelenting. On his way, he stops at Bald Hills, which has been abandoned. He talks to Alpatych and sees two girls stealing plums from the hothouse.
Chapter 9
The serfs of Bogucharovo are in revolt. With the Cossacks pillaging the countryside, the peasants decide to welcome the French and refuse to help Marya leave for Moscow. Alpatych remonstrates with Dron, the village Elder and warns of his wizarding powers. The serfs dig in, and Alpatych unloads his own cart to provide the princess with horses.
Chapter 12
Alpatych runs out to meet the soldiers with Dunyasha.
