A novelist, the Duke’s secretary: the kind of man whose first name nobody ever knows

Pierre Choderlos de Laclos spent the first part of his adult life in the army, during which time he wrote the scandalous epistolary novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons). After leaving the military, he entered the service of Philippe, Duke of Orléans and became his secretary and all-round fixer.
