Joseph-Ignace Guillotin is a well-known physician who teaches medicine in Paris. Dr Guillotin is one of the Paris deputies. He suggests that the National Assembly reconvene in a nearby tennis court when they find themselves locked out of their chamber in Versailles. Unsuccessful in his attempts to abolish the death penalty, Dr Guillotin proposed executions should be carried out more humanly using a decapitation machine. That machine was named after Dr Guillotin: the guillotine, although it was invented by surgeon Antoine Louis.
