Honor Grenville, Viscountess Lisle (1493 – ) is the wife of Lord Lisle, governor of Calais.
The story so far…
Week 13: Anna Regina (Part 2)
Lord Lisle’s “toy wife” looks Cromwell up and down. “I suppose you are Cromwell?”
If a man spoke to you in that tone, you’d invite him to step outside and ask someone to hold your coat.
Week 14: Devil's Spit / A Painter’s Eye
Cromwell thinks about Calais:
Where Honor Lisle seems more busy in affairs than her husband the Governor.
Week 45: Corpus Christi (Part 2/2) / Inheritance
Lady Lisle comes to Cromwell in November 1538 on the day of John Lambert’s hearing. ‘There is no one, other than Stephen Gardiner, whom he would less like to see before breakfast.’
She thinks Cromwell is ‘a jack-in-office’ no better than a ‘pot-boy’. She forgets his title, she calls him one of the ‘nobodies’ who are enriching themselves while her husband goes wanting. She is delightful company.
