Jean-Pierre Brissot is a prolific journalist and thinker who becomes deputy for Paris. Born in Chartres, Brissot is the son of a pastry-cook or a ‘traiteur’ and a highly educated man. He has travelled around Europe and to the USA to report on different modes of governance and campaigned for the abolition of slavery. A key figure in revolutionary journalism, Brissot is elected as deputy to Paris and becomes a prominent member of the Jacobin club. Around him, a faction begins to form, sometimes known as the Brissontins, the Girondins, or the Girondists. Brissot is a friend and colleague to Camille Desmoulins and a witness at Camille’s wedding.
