Week 31: Salvage (Part 1/3)
At Austin Friars, Matthew accidentally ends up with Thurston in the kitchen. Cromwell sends him to Thomas Avery to learn accounts. Matthew has a friend at Wolf Hall, Rob, Cromwell’s spy. Matthew asks what will be required of him. ‘I understand you, sir.’
Thurston says, 'I'm glad somebody does.'
Week 33: Salvage (Part 3/3)
We see that Matthew is undercover at Hunsdon, with the name of Rob.
I shall say to him, he thinks, lonely though you may be – in a strange house, serving under a strange name – you must make no signal, and certainly never in a woman’s presence: they see plenty that men miss.'
Before he goes, he tells him to ‘keep steady.’
Week 36: Augmentation
August, he is in Kent; his duties follow him, the boy Mathew bundling up his papers as he did at Wolf Hall, and Christophe riding at his elbow, a club slung at his saddle to beat off assailants.
Week 41: The Image of the King (Part 1/2)
Mathew at the Rolls House has got the sneezes, but it is ‘too early for plague.’
Week 42: The Image of the King (Part 2/2) / Broken on the Body
Surrey draws his blade at court and injures Mathew in a confrontation between him and the Cromwells. Surrey says to Mathew: ‘is that your name? I am sure I know you under another.’
No doubt, he thinks. From some household under suspcion, where he waits at table or carries coals: hands clean or hands dirty, working for the safety of the realm.
Week 45: Corpus Christi (Part 2/2) / Inheritance
Mathew buys a nightingale from an old woman for one mark. Christophe calls him a rustic dolt.
Week 46: Ascension Day (Part 1/2)
Chapuys recognises Mathew from Horsley, the Courtenay’s house. Cromwell denies it up Chapuys is unconvinced.
Week 47: Ascension Day (Part 2/2)
Mathew brings his master plums, and they reminisce about the day the king lost his hat at Wolf Hall.
