BOOK TWO

Book Two, Part Two

Chapter 1

Bazdeev meets Pierre at the Torzhok post-station. He is described as a “short, large -boned, yellow-faced, wrinkled old man, with grey bushy eyebrows overhanging bright eyes of an indefinite greyish colour.” He has a death’s read ring and fixes Pierre with a steady and severe gaze.

Chapter 2

Bazdeev explains why he thinks Pierre hates his life, and tells him not to return to his former way of life. When Pierre gets to Petersburg he is to hand a note to Count Willarksi.
