Pére Duchesne
A furnace-maker: fictitious alter ego of René Hébert, box-office clerk turned journalist
Pére Duchesne is the alter ego of René Hébert and the namesake of his widely read revolutionary newspaper. ‘Pére Duchesne’, is a gruff, pipe-smoking furnace-maker with a fiery temper and crass vocabulary. He serves as a mouthpiece for Hébert’s populist, anti-aristocratic and anti-clerical views, and is a favourite among the sans-culottes.
