Reginald Pole (12 March 1500 – )
The story so far…
Week 12: Anna Regina (Part 1)
In Italy, Reginald Pole calls Cromwell the devil. “The point is, he means it; it’s not an image with him, as in a fable, but something he takes to be true, as he takes the gospel to be true.”
Pole is Cromwell’s enemy. And he is Anne’s enemy. He’s on the list, with the rest of his family.
Week 32: Salvage (Part 2/3)
Pole has sent the king a book comparing him to Nero and calling him damned unless he repents and returns to Rome. Cromwell goes to see his mother and brother to ask them what they know of the book. Margaret says: ‘You may say we deprecate his writings and are dismayed.’ Lord Montague says: ‘I am not my brother’s keeper.’
Cromwell remembers meeting Reginald Pole:
He remembers a fledgling scholar, body neither tall nor short nor stout nor lean; fairish hair, broad pleasant countenace. Reginald’s pplain exterior gives no idea of the elaborate, useless nature of his mind, with its little shelves and niches for scruples and doubts.
