The Marquis de Lafayette is still a young man when he returns to France as a hero of the American War of Independence. A liberal noble and a proponent of a constitutional monarchy, he is a powerful force in the early stages of the Revolution. He is elected as a noble representative to the Estates General where he advocates for greater democratic representation. He later joins the National Assembly, where he helps write The Declaration of the Rights of Man. After the storming of the Bastille, he is made commander of the National Guard.
