   A young man approaches: 'May I offer you assistance, my lord?'
   'Tom Culpepper,' he says. The young fellow bows. Doublet silk, manners honed: by blood, some sort of Howard. Is there no end to them?

Culpepper is on the scene when Surrey wounds Mathew.

Week 43: Nonsuch

When the king falls, Cromwell is far away. But a Howard is there.

   The silken lout Culpeper is hovering around the king, with a knot of physicians and chaplains. He recalls Henry asking once, 'Why is it that whenever disaster strikes there is a Howard in the room?'
