When Thomas Cromwell was about seven, he went with his uncle John to the kitchens at Lambeth Palace, the residence of Archbishop (later cardinal) Morton. One of John’s responsibilities was weighing the loaves of bread, and it is as John’s “deputy” that Thomas learns to count.
