Jean-Sylvain Bailly is a famous astronomer and a deputy for Paris. He is elected president of the National Assembly and leads proceedings in the Tennis Court Oath. After the storming of the Bastille he becomes the first mayor of Paris. Bailly is attacked by Camille Desmoulins and Jean-Paul Marat for being too conservative. He loses popular support completely after the Champ-de-Mars Massacre, for which he and Lafayette are considered responsible, and resigns.
