I think it is to each reader their own interpretation. I find it endearing and relatable, perhaps because I've always struggled with my Rs. So it doesn't strike me as silly, just one of those things that people have. A bit like Liza's downy lip or Bilibin's wrinkles, it's just a realistic description of the diversity of people. Those are my thoughts anyway.
