Emmanuel Dobruska (or perhaps Moses Dobruska) is one of the two men calling themselves ‘the Frei brothers’, along with Siegmund Gotleb. ‘The Freis’ are two wealthy Austrian-Jewish bankers who claim to be refugees from the Hapsburgs. Their sister Leopoldine is Chabot’s new bride, for whom ‘the Frei’ brothers provide a significant dowry. The Frei brothers are arrested as speculators and spies, and share a trial with Georges-Jacques Danton and Camille Desmoulins.
Moses Dobruska’s life is a fascinating and confusing tangent, not least given the different names he adopts. Born in Moravia, Dobruska converts from Judaism to Catholicism, becomes heavily involved with the masonic movement, and writes a “Philosophie sociale” marrying Revolutionary theory with theological thought.
