Siegmund Gotleb is one of the two men calling themselves ‘the Frei brothers’, along with Emmanuel Dobruska. ‘The Freis’ are two wealthy Austrian-Jewish bankers who claim to be refugees from the Hapsburgs. Their sister Leopoldine is Chabot’s new bride, for whom the Frei brothers' provide a significant dowry. The Frei brothers are arrested as speculators and spies, and share a trial with Georges-Jacques Danton and Camille Desmoulins.
