Honoré-Gabriel Riquetti, Comte de Mirabeau
A renegade aristocrat sitting for the Commons, or Third Estate
Honoré Gabriel Riquetti, the Comte de Mirabeau, is an aristocrat whose history of scandal, profligacy and bankruptcy has alienated his noble peers. He fails to be elected as deputy for the nobility and instead is voted deputy for the Third Estate. A brilliant, bombastic speaker, he is ambitious and popular with the people of Paris. Mirabeau is a member of the Jacobin Club, where he clashes with Maximilien Robespierre and Antoine Barnave, while keeping up quiet negotiations with the palace. He advocates for a constitutional monarchy. He cultivates and patronises deputies and journalists he believes can help his personal case, including the young Camille Desmoulins.
