Jérôme Pétion, a writer and lawyer, is a radical deputy from Chartres. He is one of three commissioners chosen to bring the royal family after the flight to Varennes. He serves as second mayor of Paris and then the first president of the National Convention. He is friends with Maximilien Robespierre when both first arrive in Paris. He is friendly enough with Camille Desmoulins, even witnessing Camille’s marriage. He is an enduring friend to Jean-Pierre Brissot.
